Title of symposium:

The Role of Community-based Services, Schools and Transition Support Programmes in the Emancipation of People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities as Full and Active Citizens.

This symposium draws together three papers from two research projects focused on the situation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and on how services at different levels can support people to realise their rights and to achieve full citizenship. The papers focus on adults with intellectual and developmental disability already living in community-based services in the Czech Republic and on young people with IDD who have recently transitioned or are in the process of transitioning from school to adult life.

Both studies use a range of methodological techniques to capture the lived experience of people themselves and the views of other stakeholders and between the three papers a number of current patterns and issues are presented as well as potential solutions discussed. Conceptualisations of successful transition and adult life will also be considered and the importance of “quality of life” in a number of domains be discussed.

Paper 1: Living in Community–based Services: How Involved and Included are People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Paper 2: Factors Influencing the Development of Community-based Services for People with Intellectual and Developmental disabilities: Stakeholders' Perspectives

Paper 3: Pathways of Young People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to Adulthood: Experiences, Facilitators and Barriers from Different Angles
